When a person decides they want to improve their physical condition they have just made the biggest step they can toward getting into shape. You never make progress in anything until you make that first decision to actually start.
The next thing you should do is set a goal for yourself. If you don’t have a goal you will just go around aimlessly for a period of time and then eventually quit. The goal can be to lose X number of pounds or get to a certain percentage of body fat or pack on muscle. Unlike that last example I gave you should make it as specific as possible. That way there is a finite goal and when you achieve it you can set a new goal. It allows you to have a definite success at what you are doing.
You want to make your goals as realistic as possible. It should be something that is attainable yet still a challenge. And remember just because you set a goal doesn’t mean you can’t change it. Better to change an unrealistic goal than to just quit all together. The easiest thing a person can do is change their mind.
Next you should pick a type of workout. Of course you can pick a variety of different workouts that you do so that you don’t get bored with one. Your level of fitness will monitor what you can do. If you are very fit already than you can do any type of workout that you want. But if you haven’t exercised for 20 years and you are 100lbs overweight you will be more limited in what you can do. But there is something for everyone!
If you’ve read any of my previous articles you’ll know that I recommend interval training adapted to whatever form your workout takes. By that I mean short bursts of intense energy expended, rest and repeat. You can adapt any workout to interval training whether it is weights, running, swimming or walking or any other number of things.
Some people enjoy working out with someone. Some people like to work out by themselves. If you choose to workout with someone else it might be good to have more than one workout buddy, in that way if your friend can’t make it on a particular day you won’t have an excuse to miss your workout.
Budget may also enter in to your decisions about your workout. But the good news is you don’t have to spend any money at all to get into good physical condition if you don’t want to. Body weight exercises do not cost a thing and they are a very effective form of workout.
Of course, if you are going to the trouble of exercising you’ll also want to start eating better too, if you haven’t already been doing so. Be sure to include lots of fruits and vegetables, as well as plenty of proteins and fats (naturally I’m talking about healthy fats, not the kind you’ll find in fried foods or a bag of chips.) And it is a good idea to eat protein fairly soon after a workout so that your body can start building itself back up.
These are the basics to getting started, so start! And if you’ve already started, good for you and keep going!
